(以下文章由網頁主席郭堂提供,介紹電腦搜查資料的一項工具) -- Tony Kwock Web searching can be frustrating for you if the response time is too long or the end result is unexpected. You do not get what you want easily from the Web. Cable or DSL Internet can reduce the response time from a few minutes to a few seconds, but the end result may not always be what you seek. Now there is a Google search engine that can quickly deliver your desirable result by means of "a winning combination of smart algorithms, hyperactive Web crawlers and 10,000 silicon-churning computer servers". This Google search engine is the brainchild of two ingenious Stanford graduate students, Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Their approach is to build an index file of all domain names and their related Internet links using many computer servers (Index Servers) on a periodic (monthly) basis and then to update this index file daily. When you enter a query on google.com, one computer tracks your search and guides it through the index servers. Pertinent documents on the Web are compressed and stored in Document Servers (another set of many computers). An ordered list of Snippets (Snippet -- a meaningful title with one or two lines of descriptions) is derived from these Document Servers and sent back to your Web Server. You then click on the link to go to the matching page. This is really a magic tool to get what you seek quickly from the Internet. When I entered "cuhk" in the search field of google.com, it retrieved all web sites related to the Chinese University of Hong Kong. When I typed in "oaa-cuhk", it returned a list of our web pages. From these returned lists, I can quickly display the information I requested. Google is now very popular; the word "Google" has now been turned into a verb like "Xerox" or "Kodak". These are company names or brand names but these words are now used as verbs because of their novel and popular products. Googol is a very large number with a one following by a hundred zeroes. This new company name, Google, appears to be coined from this word "Googol". It is very interesting. |
