An exhibition of Chinese paintings, calligraphy and oil paintings, titled “Celebrating Traditions”, will be held at the San Francisco State University Downtown Campus located at 835 Market Street , San Francisco , from February 8 to July 31, 2008 .   The New Asia College Alumni Association of Northern California is organizing this art exhibition to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of New Asia College ’s Fine Arts Department last year, and the forthcoming 60th anniversary of the founding of the college in 2009.   President Robert A. Corrigan of SF State and Honorable Supervisor Carmen Chu of the City and County of San Francisco will officiate at the Opening Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, February 8, 2008 .

The exhibition is a collection of some 60 pieces of diverse artwork ranging from traditional Chinese brush paintings and calligraphy to impressionist oil paintings and computer-generated paintings.   The 20 artists include several renowned masters who had taught at New Asia College ; professional artists; and alumni artists residing mostly in the San Francisco Bay Area.   A series of lectures related to Chinese art and culture will be given by distinguished artists, art professors and curators, during the six-month period of the art exhibition.    Speakers include Mr. Kwan Jung, National Academician of the National Academy, U.S.A.; Dr. Arthur M. Kao, Professor of Art History, San Jose University ; and Mrs. Terese Tse Bartholomew, Curator Emerita, Asian Art Museum , Chong-Moon Lee Center for Asian Art and Culture, San Francisco .

New Asia College , one of the three founding colleges of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, was built after the Second World War by academics and literati who moved from mainland China to Hong Kong .  The mission of the University is to enrich and promote Chinese culture and to combine the best of Eastern and Western learning.   Professors at the time, such as Qian Mu (Chien Mu), Tang Jun-yi, Zhang Pi-jie, Mou Zhong-san and Mou Run-sun are all well-known scholars excelling in Chinese classics, history, philosophy and economics.  Dr. Yu Ying-shih, who won the John W. Kluge Prize of Lifetime Achievement in 2006, is an alumnus and a former president of New Asia College .

During the past decades, more than two hundred alumni have settled in the S. F. Bay Area and become active local citizens.   In 1992, New Asia College Alumni Association of Northern California was founded by a group of dedicated alumni and Mr. Frank Jou served as the first President.  Most of the members are professionals and entrepreneurs; and some of them are leaders in the Chinese-American community.   The alumni group wishes to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its alma mater by sharing its members’ art collections and/or their own artwork with the SF Bay Area community.  SF State has demonstrated a genuine community partnership in making the space available for the exhibition and related lectures.
